5 years ago this question was a no brainer. In order to make your home stand out to a buyer you had to make the necessary upgrades. Flash forward to today where houses are selling faster than ever, and the question among sellers is if it is even necessary?

First things first is talk to your agent! They are the expert in knowing what’s worth it in your market and how much it can actually impact your sale price.They are also the experts in knowing which room is going to get you the most bang for your buck. For example, basements don’t yield as much as a kitchen redo would or creating an open concept layout might end up hurting you instead of helping, etc. 

Now if it is just some paint refresh, or some new carpet it can’t hurt if you are going to get a good deal on some minor upgrades, but anything more than minor like we said above, CONSULT YOUR AGENT. The last thing you want to do is lose money!!

Lastly, pay attention to the market. If it is flooded with homes for sale, it probably is worth taking a look at what upgrades would benefit your sale.
